Former Olympian Kerri Strug signs autographs at Flying High Sports & Rec Center!
 | | Former Olympian "Lands" in Countryside! | The City of Countryside saw "gold" on Monday, January 12th when former Olympian Kerri Strug arrived at Flying High Sports & Rec Center. The two-time gold medalist signed autographs from 4-5 p.m., while mingling with the crowd at the Countryside destination for gymnastics, cheerleading, martial arts and dance.
According to the Marketing Coordinator of Flying High Sports & Rec Center, the kids couldn't be more thrilled for the chance to meet Strug.
"Our younger athletes are honored to be able to shake hands with an Olympian gold medalist," said Kathleen Davies of Flying High Sports & Rec Center. "Our high school members are especially enthused because they remember her legendary performance in 1996."
America's sweetheart and two-time Olympian gold medalist first gained fame in 1996 when she bravely managed to stick the landing on her second vault after injuring her ankle on her first vault, to help secure gold for the American team. Strug isn't the first Olympian to visit the recently re-located Flying High Sports & Rec Center. 2004 Olympic Champion Carly Patterson also visited the gym this past year to celebrate the grand opening.
Strug made the visit on Monday to promote youth fitness and the Tyson American Cup international gymnastics meet for Olympic hopefuls, which will take place at the Sears Center on February 21st. Flying High Sports & Rec Center will offer a shuttle to the high-profile gymnastics event for $50 per ticket, which will include entry, a tee shirt and transportation.
Flying High Sports & Rec Center is located at 5400 East Ave. in Countryside. To find out more about Flying High Sports & Rec Center, visit their website. To stay updated on notable events and appearances in Countryside, sign up for our community newsletter here on GoCountryside.net!
