Half Price Books presented a check for $25,000 to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) on May 22 for its tireless efforts to promote conservation and preserve the environment. The check was presented at Countryside Park where City officials were on hand to celebrate the occasion. "It is wonderful to see one of our businesses making this donation to a great cause committed to preserving our environment," said Mayor Robert Conrad. "We hope others will follow this great example as we all work together to protect the world we live in." The NRDC is one of America's most effective environmental action groups, and one of the world's strongest environmental advocacy organizations. The NRDC was chosen to receive the grant by public vote through the company's Web site, halfpricebooks.com, from a slate of candidates nominated by Half Price Books employees. Half Price Books also dedicated a Skyline Locust tree in Countryside Park to the NRDC and to the Half Price Books customers who have made the environmentally-friendly decision to decline plastic shopping bags. "We are pleased Half Price Books choose Countryside as the location to make this wonderful donation," Conrad said. "We are quite proud of our parks system and are honored Countryside Park could be the stage for this event." The award was presented to Natural Resources Defense Council executive director Peter Lehner by Kathy Doyle Thomas, Half Price Books executive vice president. The $25,000 award was funded through a Half Price Books initiative, the "B(eco)meGreen" project, that encouraged shoppers to refuse a plastic bag - or bring their own reusable bag - when they shopped at Half Price Books. Whenever a customer did so, 5 cents was set aside and earmarked for the award. Half Price Books is located in Countryside Plaza on LaGrange Road. More information is available at gocountryside.net |
